1st Birthday Photographs

A 1st Birthday is such a fun event to document.

I had the opportunity a couple weeks ago to document a beautiful first birthday party in Georgetown, DC.  The garden party had a creative goldfish theme.  All of the decorations where in shades of vibrant blue and orange.  There were even little goldfish centerpieces.  The cake itself was a fantastic goldfish bowl with a giant number one on top.  All of the well thought out decorations provided fantastic opportunities for detail photographs.

Photographing the guests and other children enjoying the party will be an important part of the birthday album.  This party provided plenty of opportunity to photograph children having fun with the face painting and bubble stations.

I think my favorite part of the first birthday party is watching the birthday child try and figure out what to do with the cake.  It is very important that you know when in the party timeline this event will occur and have a good photographing position.  Be ready for thrown or smashed cake!

Take-aways:

1) Talk to the parents ahead of time and determine the timeline of the event as well as what pictures are important to them.

2) Know when it is time for the cake, and make sure to get a prime spot to take photographs.

3) When taking pictures of children, it is important to get down to their level.

4) Don't forget the detail photographs.  Balloons, favors, and the cake prior to cutting are all important album pictures.

5) Mixing posed and candid photographs of guests is a great way to document the event.

Happy Photographing!
